There are many parts of our history of faith that are still a mystery. Over the past thousands of years, great thinkers have been trying to find a way to understand who God is and how God works. One of those ways is to look at God as being three parts (Father, Son and Holy Spirit), or a Trinity and that is not easy for us to comprehend. The Heidelberg Catechism, published in 1563, asks, “Since there is but one God, why do you speak of three: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit? The answer, “Because that is how God has revealed himself in his Word: these three distinct persons are one, true, eternal God.”
The term “Trinity” is not mentioned in the Bible, but has been a way for us as believers to name and understand the Oneness of God. Over the past months, we have talked about the attributes of God the Father, Jesus the Son and the Holy Spirit. Reflect on these lessons as you read the following passages and answer the questions:
Read Matthew 28:16-20
Q1. Why do you think Jesus told his disciples to baptize people in the name of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit?
Q2. What do you think Jesus was trying to remind them of?
Q3. Where are some places you hear the words “in the name of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit?”
Read Romans 5:1-5
This scripture talks about the actions of God the Son and God the Holy Spirit.
Q4. What does this passage say God the Father is doing?
Q5. What is God the Holy Spirit doing?
Q6. What is God the Son doing?
Q7. Application: ask three people (friends, family, teachers, etc.) to give you their definition of Trinity. Write it down and bring it with you to the next class time.
One of the ways we try to find a way to explain something that is hard to express in words is by using art. Using a search engine on your computer, do an image search for “Trinity”. Save and print or sketch one of the images you find. Now take a few moments to design your own image of three-in-one. Don’t worry about perfections, be creative. Give your three-in-one design to Denise or Pastor Kip.
